Retrofitting common areas of your tenement building to meet new energy efficiency standards can be beneficial for the planet- and for your wallet. 

A case study included in new guidance from Local Energy Scotland showed that, by implementing heat pumps alone, flat owners could save between £318 and £526 per year. 

However, installing heat pumps, insulation or solar panels in common areas can come with challenges. It involves working with your fellow owners, factors and contractors to achieve upgrades which work for everyone. 

That’s why Local Energy Scotland has commissioned new guidance for owners considering retrofit. Written by Harper Macleod LLP, in consultation with Under One Roof and Loco Homes CIC, it gives advice on a range of helpful topics, including understanding your titles, when and how to gain consent from other owners to carry out works, and how to establish an owners’ association or body corporate to ease the decision-making process.
