Edinburgh Chess Club
Visit the longest-established chess club in the UK
Will you play the Queen's Gambit?
Edinburgh Chess Club was established in 1822, its first meeting taking place in November that year at the North British Hotel in Princes Street. It is the longest established club in the UK and the second oldest in the world. The Scotch Gambit was originally played by the club team in the famous correspondence match played versus London between 1824 and 1826. The club has its own premises in the west end of Edinburgh and has Grandmasters and Scottish Chess Champions amongst its members.
Edinburgh Chess Club is working with partners such as Edinburgh City Council, Chess Scotland, Chess Edinburgh, Edinburgh Chess Academy and Chess in the Schools and the Community to celebrate its bicentenary with a series of planned events over the coming twelve months. The club is also supporting the charitable efforts of both “Chess in Slums” in Africa and the UK-wide “She Plays to Win” initiative.
Visitors will also have the opportunity to play a friendly game of chess!
