Song School
Explore murals created by Phoebe Anna Traquair
Are you pitch perfect?
The building was designed by Scott to be a Song School for choristers at St Mary's Cathedral and continues to be used for this purpose on a daily basis. Phoebe Anna Traquair's murals adorn the walls of the small building and are considered to be one of her best works. Painted between 1888-1892, the murals depict angels leading a singing procession of people and creatures, illustrating the canticle Benedicite Omnia Opera ('O all Ye Works of the Lord, Bless Ye the Lord'.
Portraits of the contemporary clergy, choristers and lay clerks surround scenes of the life of Christ, decorated by flowers and other allegorical scenes. The intimacy of seeing Traquair's works in the Song School makes it a unique experience that contrasts with her larger works at what is now the Mansfield Traquair Centre.
